W3: Textures

Model Integration

The Architecture

My concept of the 'futuristic' and theme of technology are most evident in the design of the roof for the Light Rail Stop. Comprised of abstract triangular forms, I was inspired by the potential to experiment with 3D shapes through digital programs.

An essential feature of the design were the pillars created by experimentation with curves and the follow-me tool. Highlighting one of the organic series in my custom textures, the pillars are also representative of collaboration concept as a supportive structural tool akin to the trunk of a tree.

Last but not least, this photo displays the other two custom textures integrated into the final design.
Firstly on the supports for the stairs, created using the paint bucket tool combined with a digitalised axonometric, and the railing, a separate object made over stencil of the box texture series.

2 Concepts

The two concepts I have chosen, as inspired by Zaha Hadid and Herzog and De Meuron (HDM), are:

Futuristic: the idea of how computers have altered the nature architecture and allowed the design of improbable forms. As exemplified by the Beijing Olympic Stadium known as the 'Bird Nest' designed by HDM as well as the renowned curved and monolithic forms of Zaha Hadid.

This concept also strongly ties in with theme of technology which I have represented in my design of the light rail stop. I selected this theme from specified list due to the prevalence of cutting-edge technology that is created, taught and shared at university.

Collaboration: idea of working together on an architectural project whether this be with artists on a building or interactions with the public

This concept also helps symbolically situate my design within in its urban context. As a fundamental ideal to any public university, collaboration is vital to any of the work done by researchers, students and tutors.

18 Axonometrics (Selection)

Basic Axonometric- Front

The very first axonometric pair that I created. Simple two plane design except with vertical spaces between the prisms to give the illusion of hovering.

2+ Plane Axonometric- Front

First experimentation with more than two planes. Harder to draw but ultimately more interesting shapes.

Futuristic Series: A three part series of axonometrics that I built upon throughout experiment 2. Representative in form of my concept for the 'futuristic'. Ultimately inspired the design for the roof of my light rail stop

Collaboration Series: Originating from experimentation with subtracting prism for axonometric in week 1, this series epitomises the collaboration concept as an interaction and merger of different prism. Also, acted as an influence for the design of walkway railing in the final model.

One of the combined axonometrics from week 2. Interesting shape.
Helped stimulated the idea to integrate one of digitalised axonometric as a featured piece in the final model
